One of the worst bathroom problems one can ever encounter is issues with the water temperature. Adjusting the water temperature is hard enough on itself and it gets even more difficult when one isn’t getting the right amount of hot water. This can definitely be a pain especially in those chilly winter days that might even lead some to give up showering just to avoid this headache. Unfortunately, this is just one of the many signs of shower plumbing issues in one’s bathroom.

While most of us will almost immediately call a plumber to spare us of all the troubles of doing it DIY style, it is also true that some problems can also be resolved without having to call for the services of a professional.

In most cases, the problems encountered by most bathrooms can be attributed to some sort of shower clog. This can very easily be avoided by making sure that the drain cap is not blocked off by hair and other fragments. However, some occasions may also require one to remove the drain cap and check on its opposite side as this also has a tendency to clog up.

If this doesn’t solve the problem then one may have to take some more advanced shower plumbing repair techniques. However, don’t let this put you off as the next few tips can still be done by untrained and relatively unskilled individuals. All it would require is a simple plunger that should be able to loosen up any debris that has caused the drain to clog.

If this doesn’t work then one may want to buy some chemical draining products from the local hardware store. These products are very user-friendly and so long as one follows the instructions properly, there shouldn’t be any problems.

However, there are still some things that are more complicated and will require a professional’s skill level. If all the previous steps have been exhausted to no avail, then it would probably be best to call a professional plumbing service. The advantage of hiring professionals is they definitely know what they’re doing. This is their job and they have been trained to deal with such situations. Instead of spending endless hours trying to resolve a situation that is practically out of one’s grasp, it may be best to swallow’s one’s pride and seek help. If all else fails, these pros should definitely be able to solve one’s shower plumbing problems in no time.

Applying for and actually getting plumbing apprenticeships nowadays is definitely much more difficult than it was a few years ago. This is primarily caused by financial reasons especially because of the fact that the government requires all workers – regardless if they are regular employees or otherwise – should receive a minimum amount of salary. Therefore, a lot of companies are no longer willing to add to their salary expenses by hiring apprentices when they can in fact already hire a professional.

One of the effects of the loss of the apprenticeship element in this particular profession is that the amount of training obtained by individuals in this field has definitely decreased. While it is true that one learns a majority of one’s knowledge through a proper education, it is also a fact that experience is still one of, if not the best teacher. By taking away the opportunity to learn from actually working as an apprentice plumber, a lot of new professionals are no longer as well-equipped and competent as they were a few years back.

Also, because there are no longer any companies that offer plumbing apprenticeships, the actual number of professional plumbers that get licensed has also decreased.
This has caused a lot of individuals to rethink their career path and opt for other “easier” professions. This goes without mentioning the massive number of foreign workers that is lowly taking over the world of professional plumbing in the UK.

A few years ago, a plumbing apprentice would work for a small amount of money and in some occasions, even do the work pro bono. Back then, people saw it not as a stable source of income but rather, an opportunity to train in a realistic environment and hone one’s mechanical skills. This sacrifice of financial gain is done in the understanding that in the future, one will be able to support one’s self and even his family by working as a well-trained, highly-skilled professional plumber. This delay in gratification will definitely pay itself back two, three, or even four-fold in the future.

Unfortunately, this is just not the case today. Because of the lack of plumbing apprenticeships programs, both the actual number of professional plumbers and the skill level of novice plumber have generally dropped. The sad part is, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get better anytime soon. If anything, it looks like its even going to get worse. Unless the government is able to find a way to bring this programs back without any additional costs for employers then we should all look forward to incessant plumbing problems in the future.

A couple of years back, there was a lot of hype surrounding the profession of plumbing. In particular, a lot of newspaper articles and TV features centered on the financial perks of being an emergency plumber. This was particularly true in and around the London area wherein said individuals earned hundreds of pounds every week just by providing plumbing services to all sorts of clients.

However, now that we’re already nearing the end of the first decade of the 21st century, a lot of people still want to know if this is still one of the most profitable professions in the UK. Hopefully, this brief article will be able to shed some light on this matter.

It is undeniable that professional plumbing has been and always will be an excellent career choice. In fact, it is even truer in London – a congested capital city that has a physical design that begs for an excellent plumbing system. Needless to say, the need for plumbers in London is still quite high. However, because of the influx of professional plumbers from other European countries such as Poland, the demand has certainly decreased. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of opportunities for an emergency plumber in London.

As mentioned earlier, London’s drainage system is definitely not amongst the best in the world. This means that no matter what, households and establishments alike will require some sort of professional help when it comes to their plumbing problems. However, for reasons already mentioned above, the current market situation points to the fact that freelance plumbing may not be the best option at the moment.

For those who are looking for more stability in their job, it may be better to opt for a job in certain institutions or companies such as schools or hospitals. Aside from having more regular hours, this also provides professional plumbers with a more stable source of income.

Instead of having to depend on the number of customers on a month, one will have a fixed salary that will come in every couple of weeks regardless of the number of repairs done. However, it is also true that the pay is not as good as that of an emergency plumber. It then becomes a matter of setting one’s priorities and making the best decision after considering all the factors involved. After all, if one is good enough, it is always an option to do extra plumbing jobs on the side – sort of like having the best of both worlds.

The kitchen is definitely one of the most important areas of one’s home. A lot of folks spend a lot of time, effort, and money just to ensure that this particular section is at its best. However, aside from the design and actual look of the kitchen, it is also necessary to give the same amount of attention on the room’s plumbing system. A lot of people tend to focus too much on its physical appearance and fail to realize the importance of kitchen plumbing.

A lot of people think that everything about plumbing should be left to the professionals. While it is true that it is always safer to do so, it may not necessarily be the most economical decision. The truth is, there are a lot of basic plumbing projects that could be done without having to hire a professional plumber.

First of all, it is necessary to note that the kitchen’s plumbing system basically consists of three parts – the water supply, the drain system, and the faucet fixture. All three are part of the kitchen sink and generally, this is the only part of the kitchen that would usually require kitchen plumbing repair.

Naturally, the water supply of the entire plumbing system goes through pipes. These are usually found under the floor and sometimes, even in the walls. One of the most important elements of this system is the vent pipe which is the part that regulates the water pressure from and to the plumbing system. The vent pipe can be adjusted using a valve which is usually located right under the kitchen sink. Therefore, this should be one of the first things to look at if one were having problems with water pressure.

The entire plumbing system consists of a variety of different types of pipes. Simple kitchens will usually have drain pipes and supply pipes. As their name implies, these two types of pipes are the ones that regulate the drainage and the supply of water throughout the kitchen.

With this basic knowledge in mind, folks should have an easier time identifying and perhaps even fixing certain kitchen plumbing problems. If this were the case, then one would not have to spend hundreds of pounds on overpriced service fees and parts replacements. Doing a little research can surely go a long way – especially amidst today’s financial global recession which has shown no signs of letting up.

Especially in today’s economy, a majority of house projects have been placed under the do-it-yourself variety. That is, in order to save a couple of pounds, some folks choose to do a lot of things on their own. While this may work for minor house repairs, one of the areas wherein this may not be the best idea is in plumbing.

Ending up hiring professional help after realizing that one’s attempt to remedy the plumbing issue on one’s own has become an all too familiar occurrence. This is simply a testament to the fact that when it comes to such vital areas in one’s home, it is best to leave it to the pros.

However, a lot of people also have problems finding the best available plumbing services in the market. Because of the rush to have one’s plumbing issues resolved, some folks end up hiring plumbers that are incompetent and just fail to get the job done. This is why it is also important to know how to find the best plumbers in town.

Before anything else, the first step one has to take is to check out the problem first. While most projects should be left to the professionals, there are some minor issues that actually fall in the do-it-yourself category. After all, plumbing services don’t exactly come for cheap and it would be a shame if one could have resolved the issues without having to pay for their services.

However, if in any doubt, it is best to go pro. One of the easiest ways to begin the search for a reliable service is by simply asking around. It is certain that a relative, neighbor, or co-worker has had problems with their own plumbing systems at home and they might be able to recommend a plumber. Having the endorsement of someone you actually know and trust should go a long way.

In the slim chance that no plumbing service is recommended, one can always turn to the internet. If not, there’s always the phonebook which should also have a long list of available plumbing services. There are more than just a few companies out there so folks should be on the lookout for companies that either overcharge or are incapable of getting things done. Be sure to avail of the services of a licensed plumber and one that has the right amount of experience to resolve one’s particular plumbing problem.

When it comes to one’s home, plumbing is definitely one of the most important things. Every new home is supposed to have an effective and reliable plumbing system that should last for years. However, as time goes by, encountering all sorts of problem is almost unavoidable. In order to save a few bucks, a lot of folks opt to do their home’s plumbing repair on their own. While this may be a cost-effective strategy, it may not necessarily be the best idea.

A do-it-yourself method should work for minimal plumbing issues such as small leaks or minor drainage problems. However, just to be on the safe side, it is always best to seek professional help when it comes to matters such as these. After all, no one would want to experience backflow of dirty water in one’s kitchen or bathroom. That would be the worst.

For instance, leaking is one of the most common, but also one of the most problematic plumbing issues out there. This is especially true for wooden interiors as excess water will promote mold growth which is definitely an eyesore in every home. Just to be able to cut back on plumbing repair cost, some folks tend to try and fix things by themselves. Unfortunately, it may not be as effective as a professional’s work.

Instances such as these often require the total shutdown of the entire home’s water supply. In order to address all the seepages, professional plumbing services will have to thoroughly check all the parts of the home’s plumbing system. More often than not, the leaks and seepages that leave a mark on the walls or the floor are usually not the only problems in the system. If a layman were to do a quick fix solution on an imminent plumbing issue, he may not be able to see all the other problems which will surely make themselves more evident in the future.

However, it is also not advisable to go with any available professional plumbing service out there. Plumbing repair rates will definitely vary and failing to scout all the available options will lessen the chance of getting the most affordable deal. Aside from cost, the reliability and quality of work of the plumbing service should also be a key priority. It would be pointless to hire a cheap professional plumber only to realize that in a few months, more repairs have to be done and spent for just because they didn’t get it right the first time.

A lot of times, you’d rather fix things yourself than hire someone else to do it in order to save money on professional fees. However, have you considered your safety when doing these things? Perhaps it would be better to get a professional after all, especially if your safety is already at risk.

In case you still want to go ahead, here are some tips on how to stay safe while doing various plumbing jobs.

First, make sure that you don’t get electrocuted. If you are doing plumbing jobs that are near an electrical source, make sure you turn off the power. Water and electricity is a deadly combination, so it’s better to be safe and just turn off the main electrical supply.

Second, protect your eyes. Make sure you wear safety glasses, plastic goggles or any form of eye protection whenever you are soldering, cutting or doing various plumbing jobs. This will ensure that your eyes stay safe in case of unforeseen situations, such as bits of concrete being blasted off.

Third, protect your ears. Some people forget to have hearing protection whenever they are using a power saw, or doing noisy stuff such as pounding or hammering. Being continually exposed to loud noise can damage your ears permanently.

Fourth, protect your hands. Wear protective gloves in order to save yourself from nasty cuts that could easily get infected. The type of gloves that you’ll require depends mainly on the type of job that you’ll be doing. If you’re working with chemicals, then you’ll need some high quality rubber gloves. If you’re doing soldering, then you’ll need heavy-duty protective gloves made of high quality leather.

Fifth, protect your limbs. Wear long sleeves and long pants in order to protect your arms and legs from accidental drips, especially if you’re working with chemicals.

Sixth, protect your lungs. If you’re working with chemicals, especially those with harmful fumes, then you might need to use a mask or respirator so that you will avoid breathing in the dangerous gases.

Seventh, make sure you use only the right tools. One of the basic rules in DIY (do-it-yourself) projects is that you should always use the right tool for whatever job you’re doing. Don’t use a screwdriver as a chisel, or a wrench as a hammer.

Eighth, keep all the relevant emergency numbers nearby. Some people prefer to place it on their refrigerator or beside their phone. The list should include the phone number for the nearest hospital, emergency services, fire department, and so on.

Plumbers are some of the most important, though one of the most underrated, professions there is. You can’t live without them, even if you only remember them when you’re faced with a dripping faucet, a clogged up drain or any other plumbing emergency.

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting people who can’t (or won’t) get the job done the way you like it. Here are some tips in choosing the best in the industry.

First, get someone with sufficient training and experience. Don’t just find someone who knows how to do an easy fix on a leak. Get someone who can discover why there was a leak in the first place and what can be done to permanently fix the problem and what you can do to avoid similar problems in the future.

In order to be able to do this, they need to have sufficient training and experience on the job. After all, you won’t really learn how to handle all sorts of plumbing situations from reading a book. Make sure also that they have the tools that they need in order to finish the repair.

Second, find someone who can give you fast, efficient service. Most of your plumbing requirements are usually emergencies. Find someone who can come to your house quickly and solve the problem swiftly. You really don’t want to wait for a week until the plumbers can come over to fix a leaking faucet. Imagine how much water you’ll be wasting if this is the case. They should be able to arrive at your house as quickly as possible and finish the work on the same day (or the next, at the very latest).

Third, get someone who is licensed. This will ensure that they are really qualified to do the work that you are asking of them. While you’re at it, check that the license is still valid and unexpired.

Fourth, find someone who offers affordable services. This is the reason why you should ask for an estimate first from different service providers so that you can better judge which one to pick.

Fifth, ask around for referrals from your friends and family. This is the best way to find the best plumbers in your area. You’ll not only find out how efficient or inefficient they are, you’ll also learn first hand from their experience how easy (or difficult) it is to deal with them. You’ll find out their work ethic and whether they can deliver on their promises.

Household plumbing needs to be flexible to accommodate just about all the pipe configurations and routings to meet the water and waste management specifications of any home construction project.

Plumbing can’t be done without fittings that connect piping and tubing sections of various shapes and sizes in different kitchen, bathroom and toilet environment, not to mention heating and air-conditioning, water purification as well as electrical, automotive and telecommunication conducting that employ similar plumbing materials to contain electrical wires.

Common Fittings Used

Across this host of applications, plumbing fittings generally make installation easy and flexible. Where before most of these fittings were made of metal, often lead, brass, steel, zinc or copper alloys which take on the same materials as used in the pipes themselves, you now have synthetic polyvinyl chloride or PVC pipes and other plastic pipes that also come with their matching set of PVC plumbing fittings that add to the complexity of choices.

Building standards and construction specification for homes meant to withstand earthquakes and last for generations often require the stronger brass and copper plumbing fixtures. These, of course, require the corresponding brass or copper plumbing fittings.

There are hundreds of special fittings widely used in various plumbing installations. Here are a few of the most common widely used fittings.

Elbow – a fitting that allow a change 90degree or 45-degree change in plumbing run direction. There are short and long radius elbows that allow flexibility in their installation.

Cap or Plug – a pipe fitting that, as the names suggest caps or plugs the ends or termination of a plumbing run. They are usually threaded that basically covers the ends like a bottle cap.

Tee – this is used to either split or combine water flow that are either enlarging or reducing combination.

It is important that the right piping run is terminated for the required type of fitting to be attached which generally comes in three common connecting modes: Welding uses special soldering process; threading which allows matching between female and male terminations with a screw-like threading action to join; and socketing which simply allows them to be bolted in place.

A more recent method of connection uses push-in fittings that have made plumbing a lot easier to deploy while saving labor costs and improving reliability over traditional tube connections. They are relatively cheaper and require no special tools. You simply cut the tube and insert the fitting allowing secure and reliable connection.

Leaky faucets and pipes, clogged drains, faulty toilet flushing mechanisms, copper repiping, low water pressure, smelly sewage pipes – these and many more problems that haunt the modern household demand immediate fix. There’s no way the comfort and convenience of 21st century lifestyles can be undisturbed if any of these remain unaddressed.

Getting the Right Plumber

Unless you are a do-it-yourself handyman yourself, chances are you need professional help. You could place a call to your neighbor who is a qualified plumber by experience or profession. You could call your friends and ask for the number of their trusted plumber. You could even drop by your corner hardware store and get a list of plumbers that frequent the store for all those fixtures, taps, fittings and the tools that comprise the trade.

But hold on. There’s a better faster alternated. No, not the Yellow pages. You could, of course, thumb through one. But what is your computer and internet doing? Go online and Google search on the subject.

The internet is now essentially a database housing hundreds of associations and directorates that have nationwide networks of private plumbing contractors on call or on demand. Where before, you rely on the yellow pages to get some plumbing work done in an instant, the internet has them all, from plumbers needed in large building projects all the way to simple home plumbing needs for water and waste management.

Check out any one of those directories and you could browse by state and location. Many sites offer 24-hour services and there are toll-free numbers to get in touch with your contractors association so you can be advised of the right plumber and quotation on your specific need. Or you could just check the credentials and experience of plumbing contractors listed on their sites and their specialties so you get an exact match on the best possible plumbing contractors you need. You can also shop around for the best quote.

Getting the right plumbing contractor is no less different from shopping around for the right goods and services you are willing to pay for. The internet allows you access to all the information that can help you decide on one. You can compare quotes that can provide the best value for the money. But for the most part, plumbing problems can be an emergency that won’t give you the luxury of time to shop around for the best value service.

Many households just grab the first available plumbing contractor they can find, no matter how much it costs. When the tub starts to overflow because of a leaky or runaway faucet, it can be a matter of cost-no-object search for the right plumber.
